Doris “Dode” Hone, 78, of Jackson, Idaho, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones in her final days.

Born on May 17, 1946, in Rexburg, Idaho, to Alma and Nellie Holmes, Dode was the youngest of five children. She and her beloved twin brother Dale, completed the family, joining their three older sisters: Bonnie, June, and DeeAnn. Dode’s early years in Rexburg were filled with play, laughter, and the closeness of her siblings. Tragically, the family lost Dale to polio at age three — a profound loss in their tight-knit home.

Growing up, Dode and her sisters enjoyed riding bikes and playing games while their parents worked hard running both their household and the family’s local welding shop. She attended school in the Madison School District through ninth grade.

At just 16, Dode married John Birch. Not long after, on March 5, 1965, their daughter Jona Dee was born. The family lived briefly in Ashton before John and Dode divorced. Determined to create a stable future for herself and her daughter, Dode moved to Idaho Falls, where she completed her cosmetology training at Vogue Beauty College. In 1971, she built a new home for herself and Jona in Ammon, Idaho — a testament to her resilience and independence.

During a trip to Wyoming with close friends, Dode met Blake Hone. The two formed an instant connection and were married just three weeks later, on October 6, 1972. After their marriage, they moved to Burley, Idaho, where Blake worked in irrigation and Dode balanced work at the Ponderosa Beauty Salon during the day and the Ponderosa Bar at night. They soon began building their first home together in Declo.

Dode helped Blake grow his business, Golden West Irrigation, while also running the Longhorn Saloon. Blake’s daughter, Leesia, came to live with them and was lovingly welcomed into Dode’s heart and home. On April 21, 1974, their family grew again with the birth of Juanita (“Nita”). Together, Dode, Blake, Jona, Leesia, and Nita enjoyed years filled with outdoor adventures — camping, water skiing, fishing, and snowmobiling.

In 1986, Dode and Blake purchased the Skyline Bar east of Rupert (Jackson), where they poured their hearts into creating a lively gathering place for friends and community. Along with the bar, they designed and built an RV park and transformed nearly 50 acres of rocky land into a thriving farm. Their hard work, vision, and love shaped Skyline into much more than a business — it became a home.

In 1997, Dode faced the devastating loss of Blake, the love of her life, when he passed away from a heart attack. Though deeply grieved, she continued to run the Skyline with strength and dedication for many years, eventually selling the business but staying on until her retirement in 2013.

Throughout her life, Dode was surrounded by dear friends, including a special group of women affectionately known as the “Bay of Pigs.” Together, they spent countless joyful hours floating the Snake River, year after year, building a sisterhood like no other.

Dode also had a passion for collecting pigs — a hobby that became a cherished part of her identity. Her collection has since been lovingly passed down to her granddaughter, Jacoby, to be treasured for generations.

Known for her independence, work ethic, and unmistakable sense of humor, Dode was fiercely kind, unapologetically honest, and deeply generous. Her strength and spirit will be remembered by all who knew her.

She is survived by her children, Leesia (Joe) Puckett of Kittitas, WA, and Nita (Steve) Smith of Heyburn, ID; her grandchildren Gary Osterhout, Johnny Christ, Kelby Knight, Jacoby (Casey) O’Connell, Ashley Hone, Reece Smith & Rowen Smith; her sister DeeAnn Hendricks; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alma and Nellie Holmes; her beloved husband Blake Hone; her daughter Jona Craner; grandson Mark Craner; great-grandson Jaxon Andrew; her brother Dale Holmes; and her sisters Bonnie Curtis and June Wood.

A celebration of Dode’s life will take place on Saturday June 14, 2025 from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Skyline Bar and Cafe, located at 1204 E 600 N Jackson, ID. A fitting tribute in the place that meant so much to her and her family.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to Meals on Wheels, one of the many organizations that offered care and comfort to Dode in her final months.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the home health and hospice nurses, as well as the many friends and relatives who visited, supported, and helped care for Dode throughout the years. Your kindness will never be forgotten.

My heart goes out to the family. Dode was like family to me as Jona and I were best friends for years. I actually lived with them for a time and she was a Mom to me. She was such a Beautiful Lady inside and out. She kept us in line and made sure we did right. I will always treasure the times we had together and very blessed to have been a part of her family.
