DeLane Terry Fetzer 72 year old Rupert resident, passed away Sunday, February 9, 2020 at his daughter’s home in Nampa.
DeLane was born April 22, 1947, to Albert and Dorothea Hieb Fetzer near Rupert, Idaho, along with four brothers—Lee Arlen, Roger, Art, Clayton--and one sister, Carol. He was raised on and helped out on his parent’s dairy farm where he did many farm chores including milking cows, taking care of livestock, working in the fields and tinkering with farm equipment which he was good at and enjoyed. The family regularly attended the Congregational Church in Paul, Idaho. Delane attended Minico High School where he was in Future Farmers of America and on the wrestling team. He graduated in 1966. A few weeks after graduation at the age of 18, he went to Boise for his military physical. Upon leaving home, he told his dad he would be home that night to help do chores. While at his appointment, one of the officers for the Army came into the room where all the boys were waiting. Some were told to get on a bus that would take them home. Others were told to get on another bus that would take them to Fort Ord, California, for Basic Training. DeLane was told to get on the bus for California; just like that, he was in the Army. He called his dad letting him know he would not be home for 60 days let alone in time to help with the chores that night. After basic training, he was able to go home for 30 days before going to Fort Polk, Louisiana, for additional training. From there he was sent to Vietnam where he served a year with the 25th Infantry During one deployment, Delane stepped on a land mine and was wounded. He spent several months at Madigan General Convalescent Hospital in Spokane, Washington, while he recuperated from his wounds; subsequently, he received the Purple Heart service metal. While he was recuperating in ‘Nam, by chance he happened to meet up with his eldest brother Roger who was also serving there at the time. The two of them spent Christmas there together. He was last stationed in Fort Lewis, Washington, where he was a Company Clerk for Headquarters and was honorably discharged in 1968 with the rank of E5. On one of his leaves home from the military, he began dating Bridget Bermingham from Rupert. They married in 1968. Delane attended one year of college at CSI where he certified in Diesel Mechanics. He worked as a diesel mechanic for Mini Cassia Equipment in Heyburn, Idaho, for 10 years and then moved on to work for Circle A Construction in Paul, Idaho, for 25 years where he was shop foreman. He ended his career by buying and operating his own semi-truck for five years where he did long and short hauls transporting magnesium chloride for Road Solutions out of Rupert, Idaho, finally retiring in 2010. During their marriage, Delane and Bridget bought a home with a small acreage near Minico High School where they erected a large shop where Delane could tinker with his boat, recreational vehicles, and just about anything else that needed tinkering. They did some extensive remodeling on their home, as well. The hard work they put into their home, jobs, and family paid off.
Delane and Bridget raised two daughters, Jamie and Janet both now living in Nampa with their families. Their home was always open providing nurture and sometimes a place to crash to many family members, friends, and pets over the years. He was an avid outdoor enthusiast who enjoyed four wheeling and boating with his family. He especially enjoyed hunting and fishing with his youngest brother, Clayton. He and Bridget often took their trailer to lakes and campsites throughout Southern Idaho accompanied by their grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Delane and Bridget were married for 46 years when Bridget passed away September 3, 2013. She was dearly missed. After her passing, DeLane carried on. He and his coffee group could be seen most mornings at Conner’s Café in Heyburn; he enjoyed searching for the perfect fishing gear on the internet. And, he was almost never without his constant fur companion, Missy. After being diagnosed with cancer, he managed well at his home in Rupert for some time and then later joined his daughter Janet, son-in-law Glendon, and their family at their home in Nampa, Idaho.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 15, 2020 at the Paul Congregational Church with Pastor John Downs, officiating. Military Honors will be presented by the Mini-Cassia Veterans. A viewing for friends and family will be held Friday evening, February 14, 2020 from 5:00 - 7:00 at the Morrison Funeral Home 188 South Hwy 24 in Rupert. Urn placement will take place at a later date in the Riverside Cemetery in Heyburn.
