Maria de la Luz Hernandez Abrego was born on January 10, 1938, in La Paloma, Texas. To
Jesus and Carmen Abrego. She spent most of her childhood in Texas alongside Estela,
Manuela, Jesus, Salvador, Refugia, Guadalupe, Ovidio, Josefa, and Ninfa.
On July 19, 1963, she married her beloved husband Miguel M. Hernandez, together, they raised
their children, Miguel Jr (Maria), Mary Francis (Elias), Melissa (Martin), Mabel, and Mateo, in
a warm and loving home in Heyburn, Idaho. As a family, they continued working in the
agricultural industry. Through their work, they made cherished memories. Agriculture took them
all throughout the northwest, where they all developed a strong ethic and love for one another.
Maria was known as “Gambling Grammy” due to her love for the penny slots in Nevada. She
adored visits from her grandchildren Felicia (Maria), AJ (Taylor), Alberto (Marisela), Jesse,
Bianca (Solomon), Michael (Cesar), Araciel, Valerie (Tegan), Michael (Emily), Fernando, Eric
(Briana), Johnny, and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, who brought her immense joy.
Her favorite gifts for birthdays, Christmas, or just because, were lottery tickets, candy, and cash!
Maria also enjoyed watching telenovelas, game shows, and the Weather Channel. She also
found a thrill in bargain shopping, especially as a loyal customer at the Desert Industry.
Maria passed away peacefully in the comfort of her own home. Surrounded by her loved ones,
on November 5, 2024. Her family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Abigail’s In-Home
