Leonard Jacob Schenk, long term resident of Burley passed away Friday, August 08, 2014. Leonard was born October 1, 1929, in Rupert, Idaho, the son of Jacob (Jake) and Mary Roemer Schenk. He attended school in Burley and graduated valedictorian of his senior class. Leonard married JoElla Penrod, March 28, 1953 in Declo, Idaho. Leonard was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, on March 29, 1975. Leonard was sealed to his sweetheart JoElla for time and all eternity, in the Idaho Falls Temple, with their family on September 4, 1976. After 40 years of marriage JoElla preceded Leonard in death passing away in November 1993. He married Bonnie Anderson August 19, 1994, they lived in Burley until his passing.
Leonard and JoElla farmed in the Rupert area before moving to Othello, Washington. They farmed in Washington for five years, where Leonard was named "Farmer of the Year" for the state of Washington. In 1962, they moved back to Idaho and farmed north of Paul, where he received the prestigious award of "Farmer of the Year" for Idaho. They farmed for many years until his retirement.
Leonard enjoyed skiing, snowmobiling, fishing and camping with his family and friends. Upon retirement he began playing golf with his friends, which became almost a daily routine. Leonard is survived by his wife Bonnie, his three children, Debra (Marvin) Price, Leonard Jay (Caralee) Schenk and Tammie Wilson; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He is also survived by his step daughter, Julie Peterson and step grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at the Paul Pine Chapel located at the Paul Cemetery, burial will follow in the Paul Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday evening from 6:30 until 8:00 at the Morrison Funeral Home, 188 South Hwy 24 in Rupert.
